“Unity in Diversity Through Art and Culture”

“Unity in Diversity Through Art and Culture” is a powerful and meaningful concept within the context of a diverse society. This phrase emphasizes the importance of uniting various elements of diversity through artistic and cultural expression.

In practice, art and culture can serve as bridges to understand, appreciate, and celebrate differences among groups. Through art, we can showcase the beauty of traditions, customs, and worldviews, while fostering mutual understanding and tolerance.

To commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17, 2024, Universitas Trisakti held a celebration on August 16, 2024, featuring various competitions and exciting activities.

Two of the highlighted competitions were the Bakiak Race and the Sarong Relay, both traditional games often held during Independence Day celebrations:

  • Bakiak Race: In this game, participants wear bakiak (a type of wide wooden sandal) and race in teams. Team members must move in perfect coordination to avoid falling, promoting teamwork and physical strength.
  • Sarong Relay: This group game requires at least two teams, with players passing a sarong to one another while holding hands. The challenge lies not only in speed but also in coordination and cooperation.

Both competitions were filled with joy and laughter as participants enthusiastically tried to reach the finish line in unique ways.

On August 17, 2024, Universitas Trisakti held the Indonesian flag-raising ceremony. Following the ceremony, a Gamelan Performance was presented. Gamelan, a traditional Indonesian ensemble consisting of instruments such as gongs, metallophones, and drums, is often used to accompany performances that depict mythological or historical stories, frequently combined with dance and vocal elements.

Later the same day, Universitas Trisakti hosted a Cultural Arts Carnival Competition, an event combining diverse art and cultural expressions into a grand celebration. This carnival typically includes competitions, performances, and exhibitions that highlight cultural richness and creativity.

The Cultural Arts Carnival included:

  • Parades and Processions: Participants marched in creative and impressive costumes, often reflecting themes related to Indonesian culture.
  • Art Performances: These included traditional dances, music, drama, and other forms of artistic expression, with groups or individuals showcasing their skills alongside chants and cheers.
  • Judging and Awards: A panel of judges evaluated the performances and artworks, granting awards to winners in various categories.

Such events are held to celebrate cultural diversity, promote local arts, and strengthen community spirit.

Concrete examples of this idea can be found in cultural festivals showcasing regional music and dance, art exhibitions combining techniques and styles from different traditions, or collaborative projects involving artists from diverse backgrounds. In this way, art and culture not only enrich personal experiences but also strengthen social bonds within diversity, creating a more harmonious and inclusive society.
